For better results, always shoot with your back to the window if possible, and turn on the lights!

Most cameras measure the light from the center of the frame, which is what they use to calculate exposure time and other variables which determine how the picture looks. When you shoot towards a window that is brightly lit, it almost always fools the camera into thinking that the scene is brighter than it actually is, and therefore underexposing the room like this. To avoid this, do one or more of the following: shoot at an angle to focus on the corner of the room rather than the window – this will give the camera a more realistic idea of exposure conditions. Use flash. Turn on the lights.

Shining a light
Bravo for remembering to turn the lights on! Not so much for putting them in the middle of the frame in the foreground! They distract, block the shot of the room, and help to trick the camera’s exposure, causing the lights to be burned in while the background is dark.

This tiny, closet-sized bathroom didn’t have much of a hope of getting photographed very well. It’s just too small. In this case, I find that it’s best to leave it out and refer to it in the description of the listing.

This picture of a somewhat dirty, grimy looking bathroom kind of creeps me out for some reason. It must be the eerie lighting or something. Bathrooms are nearly impossible to shoot without the help of a wide-angle lens. Without one, I would try and stand back and perhaps crop out the walls or doorway that you’ll invariably capture in frame or just not bother.

Split Image
By placing the wall in the middle of the frame, not only has the REALTOR® composed a very awkward looking photo, but it’s also the object that the camera used to measure the exposure for the photo, creating a bright white wall and two dark rooms. It probably would have helped to turn on the lights too.

An interesting photo, to be sure. Most of the lower part of the room has been cut off, but the sunlight and the contrasts between the orange wall and the white one makes this one particularly awkward.

Holy contrast, Batman!
Somebody really cranked up the contrast and the colour saturation on this one. Owwww my eyes!

Galley kitchens are tough. Often narrow and small, it’s hard to get them all in the frame. A better choice in this case would be to orient the camera vertically to get a portrait-format shot. I’d also be willing to bet that this photo was taken at night, hence the lack of any natural light in the dining room in the background.

All this photo tells us is that there are trees outside and that the door frame is white. Despite turning on the lights in the room, the light from outside the home was just too bright and it overpowered the camera’s light sensor, making it think it was brighter in the room than it actually was. The camera responded by under-exposing the shot, creating this useless dark mess we see here. Always try and shoot the picture with the natural light to your back, or at the very least, off to the side of the frame (the camera’s light meter usually reads the centre of the frame the most).

This huge bed appears to be crammed into a tiny bedroom. It’s probably not as bad as it looks, but the composition of this photo exacerbates the problem. Also, open the curtains and turn on the bedside lamps for a warmer, more inviting look.

Such a beautiful kitchen, left all alone in the dark. The camera’s light meter has been thrown off by the brightness of the light coming through the window and sliding glass door. A better choice would be to turn the lights on and shoot with the sliding glass door behind the camera, which would serve to illuminate the room with beautiful, natural light rather than darkening the picture by under-exposing it.
