Horrible MLS Photo Of The Day #318

Is that The Price is Right?
If it is, is that supposed to be some kind of subliminal message? “Buy me, the price is right!” Besides being cluttered and having the TV left on, this photo is also very dark. Turn off the TV, tidy up a bit (it is your job to tell the clients when their home is messy!) and use better lighting. My guess is that this shot was taken at night. Unless you have high-end professional lighting, you’re going to need the sunlight to take good pictures.
See all the usual suspects here.

What kind of camera and lens do you use for your photos?

I use a Canon Digital Rebel XTi digital SLR with a Sigma 10-20mm wide-angle lens. I always use a tripod, iso100 speed, and a shutter release to make sure each shot is level, crystal clear, and properly lit by natural light. But you don’t need to be a gear-head to take good real estate pictures. If you don’t want to invest the time and money into taking your own pictures, there are lots of third-party real estate marketing service companies that will do it for you at a good price. My photos can be viewed at http://www.timayres.ca/Properties.php
Thanks for reading, and thanks for the comment.

Do you do any post processing to deal with the barrel distortion of using such a wide angle?
P.S. I’m not a real estate agent, but I do watch the MLS to keep on top of things in my city and there are PILES of terrible pictures on there.

I don’t usually bother, other than the occasional cropping. That particular lens has really surprised me with its low distortion. I also tend to shoot most rooms from an angle, so any distortion would be hardly noticeable anyway.
Thanks again for your comments.

Great blog and photos! I have the same camera and the Canon EFS 10-22mm lens. What a difference good equipment makes!
Most agents don’t want to spend $800 on a camera, never mind another $800 on a lens, $250 on a decent flash etc.
Here’s my own bad MLS pic post:

Keep up the good work. Your clients are lucky!
