FLASH!

FLASH!

At least the REALTOR® had the sense to hide behind the wall and just stick the camera around, thus avoiding embarrassment like some other agents by appearing in their own photos.

Horrible MLS Photo Of The Day #209

Filed under: Horrible MLS Photo Of The Day — TimAyres @ 6:00 am

September 29th, 2008

Again I’d like to point out my desire to smack the people at the digital camera manufacturers who decided that the “date stamp” setting should be set to “on” when the cameras are shipped. Most people don’t bother to learn how to turn it off, and it looks awful. It’s also redundant; all digital camera files are date-stamped in the jpeg file’s metadata (along with info like shutter speed, aperature, focal length, etc), which doesn’t show up in the photo.

Also, this isn’t a very good shot of the bathroom. Dark, poorly composed, and too tight an angle. Wide-angle lenses are your friend.

Peek-A-Boo!

Peek-A-Boo!

It kind of looks like the REALTOR® was hiding behind that stone wall in order to surprise somebody in the other room. Just a couple of steps to the right would have helped things immensely.

Today’s efficient floor plans and compact home design can really make a REALTOR®’s job difficult when it comes to presenting a home in photos. Half of this kitchen has been cut off because of the type of camera the agent is using (likely a point-and-shoot zoom model). Using a wide angle lens, the whole kitchen could be presented to buyers and it would look a lot bigger.

Split Personality

Split Personality

I think the REALTOR® here has tried to capture too much in one photo. At any rate, it’s poorly composed and looks awkward.

Is The Election Campaign All About Branding and Buzzwords? [Video]

Filed under: Discussion, Just For Fun, Video, marketing — TimAyres @ 5:27 pm

As a REALTOR®, I’m always taking notice of how other businesses market and brand themselves. I get inspiration for ideas from other people and businesses all the time. One thing I’ve noticed is that politicians in our current Federal election campaign have been all about branding and marketing their campaigns, rather than telling us what they’ll do for us if elected. What do you think?

Here’s a quick video I shot of Conservative candidate Troy Desouza in his heavily-branded car. He even waved for the camera!

Blogging W-5 Wednesday Part 1 – Why?

Filed under: Discussion, Personal, W-5 Wednesday, web 2.0 — TimAyres @ 3:43 pm

As one of our real estate board’s most prolific bloggers, and certainly one of the most active bloggers in the region, many people ask me questions about it. In this weekly section, I’m going to answer the W-5 (Who, What, Where, When, and Why) of blogging. I hope you’ll enjoy my commentary.

Q: Why do you blog?

lol, nostalgia!

lol, nostalgia!

This is an extremely common question. In fact, I’m sure I asked it of a few bloggers (both REALTORS® and other types) before I got into it.

I blog for many reasons. Blogs are a great way to draw traffic to your brand. And for those in small business, this can’t be underscored enough. I would say that there isn’t any other more cost-effective and efficient way to draw attention to your services and your expertise by writing a good blog. Search engines love blogs, especially those that are updated regularly. Why? Search engines like Google love content; and a blog is all content when it’s done properly. Search engines also love recent information and sites that are constantly being updated. Again, a blog by definition is constantly being updated with current information and stories. Seach engines also love links. A good blog will have lots of links to related information on the Internet.

That being said, it’s not at all about gaming the search engines. Google didn’t get to be Google by being easily fooled. Search engines know when they’re being gamed. Try and manipulate the search engines and you’ll get penalized.

A blog is also a great way to have a two-way communication with your audience. In my case, I want my current and future potential clients to read my blog and comment on what I have to say. Most blogs have a comment function which allows a conversation or discussion to occur. I have my opinions, you have yours. Let’s talk about it in the comments section. Beneath each post is a link to comments. Use it. Engage your audience. Ask for feedback. Write something controversial and see what happens.

Lastly, I blog because I like to blog. I love to write and I have opinions – what a deadly combination for a blogger! If you decide to start a blog solely for reasons one and two above, it will suck. Guaranteed. You’ll come off as cheesy and fake. You have to like to write and you must practice. It takes a while to find your voice. My number one tip if you want to start blogging for your business or anything else? Read lots of other blogs for a few months. It will help you define your voice. You’ll learn what to say and what not to do, and get a few ideas for posts.

Do you have any questions about blogging? Post them in the comments below, or send me an e-mail.

Bell’s -er Campaign Might Be Confusing, But At Least It’s Grammatically Correct

Filed under: Discussion, Just For Fun, Personal, Video, marketing, technology — TimAyres @ 3:00 pm

Since I wrote about Bell’s confusing -er infused advertising campaign, it’s become one of the most searched-for, read, and commented-on posts I’ve ever done. I guess I wasn’t alone in my confusion or annoyance with that campaign.

I have to wonder, however, if the same outfit that drummed up that campaign is involved with US wireless carrier T-Mobile’s new Google Android powered phone, the G1 [warning: link has music].

I had to laugh at this one, as the concept has been taken one step further by abusing the already-beleaguered English language by proclaiming that the G1 is “The Only Phone That Makes You Smarterer.”

Yes. Smarterer. See for yourself:

Just a few feet to the left would have made this a pretty nice photo, showing attention to detail in the finishing of the banister, and how the traffic flow would work in this home.
